Man pleads guilty to attempted murder of Gonzales police officer
GONZALES, Calif. (KION) A man accused of shooting at a Gonzales police officer has pleaded guilty to the attempted murder.
The shooting happened in June 2019. Corporal Brian Solis was conducting an interview and said the man, Ramon Curiel, appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance.
Solis tried to detain Curiel, but he ran and led Solis on a chase through Gonzales. When they got to Alta Street, Solis said he saw Curiel reach near his waistband and fired his taser. At the same time, Curiel turned and fired a handgun once at Solis and missed.
Curiel got away and hid, but he was found hiding in brush three hours later. He was taken to Natividad to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.
The Monterey County District Attorney's Office said Curiel pleaded guilty to attempted second degree murder, being a felon with a gun, concealing an unregistered gun and an enhancement for personal use of a gun.
A Monterey County judge is expected to sentence Curiel to 22 years and eight months in prison next month. Because it was an attempted murder on a police officer, it qualifies as a super strike under California's Three Strikes Law.
