Ben Lomond residents hold vigil over death of deputy
BEN LOMOND, Calif. (KION) A large crowd gathered in Ben Lomond Park Sunday evening for a second vigil that day for Sgt. Damon Gutzwiller. People came together to remember the man who died in the line of duty on Saturday.
The mood was somber, but hopeful. There was a sense of gratitude for the sergeant's service and dedication. People took turns speaking whatever was on their heart. Some people knew Gutzwiller, others spoke on the awakening his life is giving the community in the sense that he is inspiring kindness and an earnest desire to serve.
One woman who spoke during the vigil says her daughter got to know him, through his volunteer service in the neighborhoods.
"He would take the time to take a knee, to get to know our community members and got to know my daughter in a way that we won't ever forget," said Summer Mangrum, a Ben Lomond resident. "He went above and beyond any police officer or sergeant I've ever seen."
There were about a hundred or so people gathered.
Sgt. Gutzwiller leaves behind a wife and a child. He was also expecting another baby.
