MARINA, Calif. (KION) Marina Police Chief Tina Nieto said the department has received unverified information that a group may target the city's shopping areas in the near future.

The department is asking community members to report suspicious activity around closed businesses, but said it will provide extra monitoring in those areas as well.

"We want you to know that we take all threats to our community seriously, and we will be prepared for any potential violence and harm to our local businesses," Nieto said.

The Chief said the department supports the community's right to join a protest because it is critical to a democracy and the core of the First Amendment, but will not tolerate violence or destruction at businesses.
