Santa Cruz protest aftermath

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KION)

A large group turned out to protest the death of George Floyd at the Santa Cruz Police Department, Wednesday night.

Walls, sidewalks and a statue were covered with strong messages written in spray paint.

That included words like "Blue Lives Murder," "Pigs," and "Kill the KKKOP in you," as well as "RIP George Floyd."

This was a different scene from a more peaceful protest that took place in Santa Cruz previously that afternoon.

This morning, crews are showing up to restore the aftermath.

Local residents showed up to check out the damages and said they had mixed feelings about the situation.

One man said he is trying to round up the neighbors to help crews in their efforts.

A police officer on site said he was just happy more serious damage was not done.
