UPDATE 6/4/2020 6 p.m. A man has been taken into custody after a standoff situation with Pacific Grove police.
Police said they first responded to the 200 block of Grove Acre Avenue at around 8:30 a.m. for a report of a peace disturbance and found that a man had barricaded himself inside his apartment.
Officers safely evacuated neighbors and called in more resources including neighboring police departments and PG&E.
At about 5:30 p.m., officers were able to take the man into custody without harm. Nobody else was found in the apartment.
The arrest came moments after police were using a loud speaker to tell the man barricading himself in the apartment that they have placed a charging device for his cell phone in the stairway so they could continue negotiations.
For most of the day, the area was quiet. Not much was developing between 12:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Many neighbors were onlooking for much of the day. They say this is normally a peaceful area.
"It's definitely different. It’s not usual for Pacific Grove community at all. We’re a pretty quiet neighborhood, a lot of elderly people and everyone is generally pretty calm so it’s definitely new." says Cameron Reed.
"It is unnerving because it’s the world we live in and the community at that. It’s a peaceful place, but ya know chaos can erupt anytime," said another Pacific Grove resident.
Police are continuing to investigate the situation.
The Police Department said it would like to thank community members who dropped off water and supplies.
