CHP Monterey: Hit-and-run suspect leads officers on chase
SALINAS, Calif. (KION) A suspect is in police custody after Monterey-area CHP officers said they were involved in a hit-and-run and led officers on a chase.
The incident started in the jurisdiction of Hollister/Gilroy's CHP office when the driver was allegedly involved in a hit-and-run crash. Eventually, Monterey-area officers took over when it was heading south on Highway 101 near Boronda Road.
When the chase got to Potter Road, officers said they deployed a spike strip that stopped the vehicle.

At that point, the CHP said the suspect got out of the vehicle and pulled out a gas can. Officers said he poured it on himself while holding a lighter and threatening to kill himself.
Officers were able to convince the suspect not to kill himself. He was arrested and taken to get treatment.
