UPDATE 5/29/2020 11:40 a.m. The officer arrested in connection to the fatal arrest of George Floyd, Derek Chauvin, is facing third-degree murder and manslaughter charges, according to the Hennepin County Attorney.
"We have now been able to put together the evidence that we need. Even as late as yesterday afternoon, we did not have all that we needed," said attorney Mike Freeman. Freeman said he was unable to speak about specific pieces of evidence.
Freeman said the other officers involved in the incident are under investigation and said he anticipates charges.
PREVIOUS STORY: The CBS affiliate in Minneapolis reports that former police officer Derek Chauvin has been arrested in connection to the death of George Floyd.
In a video, Chauvin is seen with his knee on Floyd's neck during an arrest, and Floyd later died. Chauvin had been a Minneapolis police employee for 19 years.
The arrest happened Monday when officers responded to a report of someone trying to use a forged document at Cup Foods. Police said at first that Floyd resisted arrest and suffered a medical incident, but WCCO says video obtained by CBS News shows Floyd cooperating when the incident began.
The video showing Chauvin with his knee on Floyd shows him pleading that he could not breathe until he stopped moving and became unresponsive.
Four officers were fired as a result of the incident.
The video quickly circulated on social media, sparking days of protests in Minneapolis and cities around the country.
