Central Coast sees signs of hope as some alternative care and safekeeping sites and may no longer be needed

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KION)

The city of Santa Cruz recently shared a picture on social media of an empty cold facility and thanked the community for their "sacrifices" during the ongoing pandemic.

In a Facebook post, they announced the termination of a lease for a cold facility that would have been used for safekeeping victims, saying it was no longer needed.

They say they created this room as early projections of the pandemic showed numerous local residents would pass away during the crisis, potentially overwhelming their morgue.

Santa Cruz County says its case counts are low and contribute it to the people's efforts, stating in the post, "The success story is yours."

Meanwhile, Monterey County is saying it might not have to use some of their alternate care sites.

The state of California recently donated 15 trailers to be used for up to 120 patients recovering from COVID-19 who may not have anywhere to go.

This alternate care site in King City is the first to be opened in South County.

Monterey County Emergency Response Services Manager, Gerry Malais, says not all alternate care sites may be used but preparations will continue to take place in case they are needed.

"This is not just about people that get infected, this is about keeping it from people that aren't infected. The county is stepping up to do what it needs to do to protect its people so that this disease will limit its spread," said Malais.

The alternate care sites at the Monterey County fairgrounds is currently not being used as officials say there are not enough patients to begin housing them.
