SALINAS, Calif. (KION) The City of Salinas said a section of Main Street will be closed due to unstable conditions.

Cal Water is installing a new water main between West Alisal Street and San Luis Street, and crews encountered what they call "unforseen and unstable" underground conditions.

The city said in a press release that crews came across sandy layers underground.

For public safety reasons, the city said the section of road is expected to be closed on Thursday, Friday and Monday, or until site conditions improve.

The water main installation is part of the Main Street Streetscape Project.
