MONTEREY, Calif. (KION) Owner of Sirens Salon Studio in Monterey, Jodi Petersen, reopened her business, Monday.

"I have to do what I feel is right in my heart. I wanted to get back in here," said Petersen.

Sirens Salon Studio has stayed dark for weeks, but now, Petersen said it is time for her to get back to work. "I've been out of the salon for 50 days. That's the longest I've ever been away from my salon," said Petersen.

Petersen said she has yet to hear back from California's Employment Development Department after applying for benefits, and is in a tough spot financially. "My business is essential. This is my livelihood. This is how I pay my bills. For them to dictate who is and who is not essential just doesn't sit well with me," said Petersen.

Monterey County's Shelter in Place order has been extended through May 31. Restaurants, some retail stores and salons are asked to stay closed.

Petersen said she understands the risk she is taking by reopening. Operating a non-essential business during the Shelter in Place order could earn owners a misdemeanor charge and up to $1,000 fine or 90 days in jail.

"The Shelter in Place order is extremely important. People need to abide by the terms of it. We are responding very quickly to the complaints we've received," said Monterey County Deputy District Attorney, Emily Hickok.

The Monterey County District Attorney's Office has received over 100 complaints and have contacted around 70 business owners.

Petersen said she is 'okay' with facing a potential consequence, but is not 'okay' with letting her business go without putting up a fight.

"I don't want to lose my business. I've had this salon for 15 years. It just means so much to me. I need to work and pay my landlords," said Petersen.
