MONTEREY, Calif. (KION) The Monterey County District Attorney's Office said it has reached a settlement with Monterey Peninsula Engineering resulting from claims that the company violated environmental laws in Monterey and Santa Cruz counties.

One of the alleged violations was for improper disposal of asphalt emulsion.

Monterey Peninsula Engineering will pay $27,500 in civil penalties, $27,500 in costs and $25,000 as an additional project to the Central Coast Ambient Monitoring Program-Groundwater Assessment Protection.

MPE has also agreed to remove large amounts of concrete, asphalt and other debris on the beach below its construction yard in Sand City, which the DA's Office said is the result of decades of erosion. The move is expected to improve beach access and improve the coastline's natural beauty.

Before starting the work, MPE will have to submit a coastal development permit application to the California Coastal Commission.
