Standoff over stolen vehicle at Fisherman’s Wharf
MONTEREY, Calif. (KION) People gathered to watch as police stood off with a suspect in a stolen car on Saturday morning.
The man surrendered to police without a fight—but it wasn’t clear they’d see such a peaceful ending when the whole thing started.
“You heard one of the police officers saying on his megaphone, ‘you’re in a stolen vehicle, you’re under arrest, please exit the car,’" witness Valerie Burt said. "Something like that.”
Police said they noticed the car in a Fisherman's Wharf parking lot and realized it had been stolen just days ago. The man was inside.
“He put up different kinds of cardboard on the windows, so they called for additional resources,” Monterey Chief of Police, Dave Hober, said.
Most of the Monterey Police Department responded and an officer started negotiating with the suspect from afar.
“[He] continued to barricade with some foam that he had in the car,” Hober said.
That's when police said they used a "less-lethal weapon" that shoots foam rounds. That shattered one of the side windows.
But the subject still did not respond. So, police tried pepper spray. After that, the suspect got out of the car
“He finally came out on his own," Burt said. "And I got up close to him and he looked physically okay.”
The man has been identified as 37-year-old Jason Robbins from Fresno. He is in custody, charged with possession of stolen property and obstructing/resisting police officers.
