Marina approves loans for residents and businesses impacted by COVID-19

MARINA, Calif. (KION)

Help is on the way for some residents and businesses in Marina to ease financial stress caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The city approved a plan at a council meeting that will disburse loans of one hundred thousand dollars among approved residents and another one hundred thousand dollars to local businesses.

With the shelter-in-place forcing most work places to minimize or shut down, officials say many people are left with few options to get by.

"People are hurting now, and if people are overly stressed or they lose their homes or they lose their businesses…that's not good for anybody and it's not good for our community, our social fabric, our quality of life," says Marina City Mayor, Bruce Delgado.

People wanting to apply will have to provide documents proving residency in Marina since at least January 2020, proof of trouble paying bills and proof of economic impact caused by COVID-19 to see if they are eligible.

Not everyone will qualify but officials say if this program is successful, more assistance could be continued as needed in the future.
