Californians risk losing parks access by not following orders
The California State Parks foundation is urging residents to make a change, or the luxury of state parks being open will no longer be on the table.
Officials say residents need to modify their behavior by adhering to social distancing mandates and avoid crowding open spaces in the wake of the spread of coronavirus.
Governor Gavin Newsom has now ordered the closure of parking at state parks that experience high visitation.
To be clear: the shelter-in-place order allows people to get out for exercise, which is why people are able to hit the trails still.
As the weekend approaches and people have free time, state park leaders are urging residents to follow the guidelines so that we can benefit from continued safe access.
Here are some guidelines:
On your way to the park
- Visit parks close to your home
- Wash your hands and bring sanitizer
- Maintain social distancing while traveling
- Make no stops while driving to and from trailheads or parks
At the park
- At all times, observe social distancing of at least six feet from other people
- Do not congregate in groups
- Adhere to signage and closures at the parks
- Step off trails and allow others to pass, keeping at least six feet of distance
- Bring water or drinks, public fountains may be disabled and should not be used, even if operable
- Keep pets on a leash at all times, if park allows
