Silver linings while you’re sheltering in place
It’s understandably a scary time for a lot of people being forced into their homes as social distancing is becoming the new norm, for now. But instead of focusing on all the ugly, we wanted to focus on some of the silver linings and we wanted to remind you you’re not alone.
We’re already seeing the changes of county-wide shelters in place. It’s a ghost town in a lot of places, and parents are forced to stay home with their kids and work remotely.
But the bright side of being stuck at home is not having to spend money on gas commuting to and from work.
The average commute time in this state is a little over 25 minutes and gas in Monterey County right now is around $3.16. Depending on what you drive, you will likely be saving hundreds of dollars as these new rules continue to be enforced. According to Frontier Travel Agency, those in Monterey would save $1,637 on gas annually from working at home. They say those in Salinas would save $1,330 and in Santa Cruz $1,150.
Another thing to note…people who work from home are generally less stressed.
But we are well aware many still have to go to work during this time.
If you’re one of those at home with kids, make this a time to unplug and simply have face-to-face conversations.
We asked viewers around the county to let me know how they’re passing time. Eddie Thomas says he’s catching up on missed time with the kiddos. Tiffany Caulk says she gave her husband two more drawers in the dresser by cleaning them out. And Rita Salsedo says she's stress eating.
A reminder for you: you don’t have to stay inside! Get out and explore the wonders of California.
Most trails at State Parks remain open…just keep practicing social distancing.
Whatever your preference during this time, see the good in it. And when this is over let's never again take for granted small things like handshakes, coffee with friends, or full shelves at stores.
So yes…this is not fun, but it's necessary. Keep those chins up, we’re in this together!
