Pacific Grove limits e-bike speeds on Rec Trail
PACIFIC GROVE, Calif. (KION) In response to complaints about certain vehicles on the recreational trail in Pacific Grove, the city amended its ordinance on the issue. Now, specific vehicles, like pedicabs, motorized scooters, and certain speedy e-bikes are banned. Less powerful e-bikes are still allowed on the trail, but with some restrictions.
State law refers to them as Class 1 and Class 2 electric bicycles, and they’re identified by having a top speed of 20 mph. But those are now being given a speed limit of 12 mph.
“I think if they have a speed limit, which they now have, that they’re just fine on the trail because sometimes people can go just as fast on a regular bike,” Pacific Grove resident Miriam Lilley said. “So as long as they’re aware of pedestrians and little kids, I think that’s just fine.”
Other Rec Trail pedestrians say tourists are a big part of the problem. They don’t know much about the area, and they get caught up in the views—not realizing how fast they’re going.
“You hate to limit people, but it really takes away from those that really come here for a reason—to just be present and enjoy the area,” trail pedestrian Diana Hagerty said.
The ordinance will take effect in mid-March, according to the city.
