GREENFIELD, Calif. (KION) A former Greenfield teacher pleaded no contest to having sex with a minor and unlawful sexual penetration with a minor, according to the Monterey County District Attorney's Office.

In December 2018, 47-year-old Jerry Mares was a teacher at Vista Verde Middle School when he was reportedly found partially clothed in the backseat of a vehicle with a 16-year-old girl.

Mares is set to be sentenced on March 24. He is facing three years and eight months in prison, three years of probation with up to a year in jail, mandatory sex offender registration for at least ten years and required participation in a sex offender treatment program.

Police said it was not forced, but because the girl was under 18, she was not allowed to give consent and her parents did not give consent.

At the time of the incident, the Greenfield Unified School District told KION that the girl did not go to the middle school.
