New Salinas library set to open over weekend
SALINAS, Calif. (KION) A new library in Salinas is set to open to much fanfare over the weekend as the city continues to build new infrastructure this year.
The two-story, 21,000 square foot El Gabilan Library on North Main Street greatly expands from its original 3,400 square foot predecessor.
The new building tries to maximize natural lighting with wide-sweeping windows and panels, while also utilizing vibrant color spaces to cater to children, teens and adults.
In addition to books and computer labs, the library features an outdoor reading deck, a multi-functional community room and even a digital studio and "makerspace."
City staff say they hope El Gabilan becomes a central hub for everyone in the community, including Spanish speakers. The Spanish word for library, "biblioteca," is emblazoned on the signage of the library.
"We have a number of monolingual Spanish speakers in our community and we want them to feel like this is their library as well," said Kristan Lundquist, the Salinas Library and Community Services Director. "So we felt that it was important to highlight the Spanish version of library just as much as the English version."
There is going to be a grand opening celebration on Saturday starting at noon at the new library. It will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, tours along with performances and activities. The public is invited to attend.
