PGPD warns of scammers pretending to be friend, coworker

PACIFIC GROVE, Calif. (KION) Pacific Grove police are warning members of the community about scammers posing as friends or coworkers.

Police said they have received reports of people getting emails or texts that seem to be from people they know requesting a gift card and the gift card information.

After getting the information, police said the scammers drain the balance. They said it targets the generosity and familiarity of the victim with the person they believe is asking for help.

Police said a way to avoid the scam is to call the friend at the number saved, not the one in the text or email, and ask if they sent the request.
