SEASIDE, Calif. (KION) Police in Seaside are encouraging residents to register security cameras because they say it may help solve crimes.

Registering cameras lets law enforcement know if there are cameras in the area where a crime happened with footage they can look at.

Cameras at homes and businesses can be registered anonymously, and the service is free.

Police said information will be secure and not made public, and only law enforcement can see the footage. If a crime happens in the area, you may be contacted by law enforcement so they can review recordings. Police said participation is 100% voluntary.

Some agencies may also provide items such as window stickers and signs to let potential criminals know that you are protected
