Video of man slipping on rocks in Bonny Doon serves as beach safety reminder
BONNY DOON, Calif. (KION) A new video from California State Parks shows just how important it is to be aware of your surroundings on beaches.
The video showing a man being swept from rocks by a wave was shot at Bonny Doon Beach Friday at around 4 p.m. Gabe McKenna with California State Parks said a witness called 911, but by the time rangers and lifeguards responded, the person was on shore. He was treated by fire crews and medics at the scene.
The extent of his injuries is unknown, but the 20-year-old Boulder Creek man survived.
“Sometimes waves will double up, and you’ll think you’re in a safe spot and all of a sudden a wave will just suck you in so quickly back into the Ocean,” State Park Lifeguard Dan Perry said.
Perry said many of these accidents happen when people aren’t expecting to be in the water, and are fully clothed which then weighs them down.
The Santa Cruz County Parks Superintendent said that if you are standing on wet sand or rocks, you are too close.
