MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KION) Two elementary schools in Monterey County have been named California Distinguished Schools by the Department of Education.

Monte Vista Elementary School in the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District and New Republic Elementary School in the Santa Rita Union Elementary School District are two of the 323 schools that will be honored at an award ceremony at the Disneyland Resort in February.

The Monterey County Office of Education said the schools were awarded for their work toward closing the achievement gap and exceptional student performance. Some indicators include test scores, suspension rates and English learner progress.
