Salinas tied as 43rd deadliest city in 2018
SALINAS, Calif. (KION) Salinas is tied as the 43rd deadliest city in the country, according to 2018 murder rates in 65 major U.S. cities
Salinas tied with Columbia, South Carolina with a rate of 12 per 100,000 people in 2018. There were 19 murders in Salinas last year, down from 28 the year before. In 2019 so far, there have only been six by KION's count.
It is estimated that more than 16,000 people were murdered in 2018 around the country, down 6.2% from the 2017 estimate.
The city with the highest 2018 murder rate was St. Louis at 60.9 per 100,000 residents. Baltimore was second at 51 per 100,000 followed by Detroit at 38.9 per 100,000.
