California Endowment shows ‘strong support’ for MILPA after controversial video

The California Endowment, which is a philanthropic partner with MILPA, is speaking out in “strong support” after a controversial video was released apparently showing one of its members flashing what appears to be a gang sign.

The video from the Monterey County Jail is a recording of a group chat between inmates and a group of people outside the jail. In it, MILPA’s leader, Israel Villa, flashes what appears to be a gang sign used by the Salinas East Marqueta.

In response to the video, the California Endowment said, “We, as Philanthropic partners are speaking out in strong support of MILPA because we know firsthand that organizations and advocates working to reduce violence in their community and bring peace to so many, are at times targeted themselves for speaking out and pushing for systems transformation to an oppressive and discriminatory justice system.”

The organization said it values MILPA’s contributions to the Salinas Valley and said, “Their healing informed, youth development, community empowerment and justice advocacy work are critical to the Salinas community.”

The statement released by the organization also said it does not condone violence, criminal gang activity and trusts that MILPA and the Action Council of Monterey County will conduct an appropriate personnel investigation.
