This year’s annual “shakeout” felt extra important at CSUMB

For the 12th straight year, schools and business across the state participated in the “great shakeout”. Held every October 17 and 10:17 a.m., schools like California State Monterey Bay hold an earthquake drill.

Thursday marks the 30th anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake.

This year, CSUMB had more participation than normal, and many say it felt extra real since there were already several earthquakes on the Central Coast this week.

Over the last few days, the schools emergency services had some real practice.

“Checked buildings and some evacuated that really felt it,” CSUMB emergency manager Ken Folsom said. We did some notifications out to the campus that the campus was safe, and that we could resume operations.”

The school sends out an “otter alert” for the drill Thursday morning and students are notified to leave their classroom.
