Salinas man found guilty of being a felon in possession of a gun

A Salinas man was found guilty of being a felon in possession of a gun. Detectives found out about the call by monitoring his calls after he was arrested.

33-year-old Steven Acosta was a passenger in a vehicle on Jan. 21 when it was stopped by Greenfield police. Officers said he had an active warrant for his arrest, so they arrested him. After his arrest, Salinas police said detectives monitored his phone calls.

In one of the calls, police said Acosta asked a friend to get a gun that was hidden in the hood of a car. He stressed how important it was that the gun was retrieved, so his friend got it for him and stored it at her house. Detectives found the gun at her home a few days later. Because of prior felony convictions, Acosta was prohibited from having a gun.

Acosta faces up to 8 years in prison, but his sentencing has not been set yet.
