Gilroy Police announce Text to 9-1-1

The Gilroy Police Department has announced Text to 9-1-1 is now available in Gilroy along with the rest of Santa Clara County (except Campbell and Los Gatos).

Text to 9-1-1 can be used if you need help, but can’t speak on the phone safely or can’t speak. Using a mobile phone people can send a text message to 9-1-1.

The Gilroy Police Department says Text to 9-1-1 is a secondary alternative for those unable to actually call 911 you are asked to call if you can and text if you can’t.

They also add that translation services are not available with Text to 9-1-1.

Below are Text to 9-1-1 instructions the Gilroy Police Department shared on its Facebook page:

How to text 9-1-1 in an emergency:
1. Enter the numbers “911” in the “To” field.
2. The first text message to 9-1-1 should be brief. Include address, city and type of emergency (police, fire or medical”.
3. Push the “Send” button.
4. Be prepared to answer questions and follow instructions from the 9-1-1 dispatcher.
5. Text in simple words – do not use abbreviations.
6. Keep text messages brief and concise.
Remember to please call 9-1-1 in an emergency if you are able to speak.
