Groundwater contaminant remediation underway in Monterey
The city of Monterey said a second round of groundwater contaminant remediation is underway on Del Monte Avenue at the eastern end of Window-on-the-Bay Park.
It started Monday and will continue through Oct. 2. The city said the firm conducting the remediation is using a nontoxic soil injection treatment that uses natural microbes to deconstruct legacy pollutants.
The remediation planning started in 2014, and the goal is to resolve legacy underground pollutant concentrations of PCE and other contaminants in the groundwater from the former dry cleaning use that was at the location for decades.
“The city is taking proactive steps to improve the environmental groundwater condition at the site, and is committed to implementing the most technically and economically effective and efficient way to accomplish the cleanup of this priority remediation site,” said Monterey environmental regulations manager Tricia Wotan.
The work is being performed by environmental services firms Trinity Source Group Inc. and Integral Consulting Inc. on behalf of the city and under oversight by the Central Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board.
The area will be fenced off, and direct-push drill rig equipment will be used between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Other activities will happen between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.
