UPDATE: Salinas school district approves resolution to request end of city’s contract with LivePD

UPDATE: The Salinas Union School District Board of Trustees approved a resolution requesting the city end its contract with LivePD.

On Tuesday night, they voted 6-0 approving the resolution, which included a member absent.

The Salinas Union High School District’s Board of Trustees is set to vote on a resolution on Tuesday requesting that the city ends its contract with LivePD.

The resolution says the district is respectful of the work of the officers with Salinas police, but that it contributes to a negative representation of the city, specifically by “turning real-life situations into entertainment and overgeneralizing the Salinas community as criminally inclined.”

The resolution also mentioned that cities in other parts of the country have already ended agreements with LivePD because of a negative impact on community image.

Last month, Salinas police asked for community feedback about LivePD’s presence in the city, andout of 4.400 responses, 93% said yes when asked if they felt LivePD portrays Salinas in a positive way.

LivePD, a cable television show on A&E, has been in Salinas for almost a year and gives viewers a look into the day-to-day calls officers respond to.

On the show, camera crews follow patrol units around Salinas on Fridays and Saturdays, broadcasting everything from routine traffic stops to domestic disturbances live on television.

The Board of Trustees meeting is happening at 7 p.m. in the district board room.
