Monterey County Superior Court adding small claims hearings in Greenfield
The Monterey County Superior Court announced that the Small Claims Department will start conducting some trials in Greenfield.
The small claims trials will be held at the Greenfield City Council Chambers starting in September.
This comes after the regular South County Traffic calendar was added. The court said that since it started in June, the department has had an 83% increase in the number of cases heard in Greenfield. The court also said the addition of small claims trials supports its commitment to enhancing access to South County residents.
“We are pleased to be able to expand court services in South County to include small claims cases. These cases do not involve attorneys, and we want to provide a convenient forum for the parties to resolve their cases. We will continue to explore the different case types we can bring to South County,” said presiding Judge Lydia Villarreal.
Greenfield city leaders and South County mayors have shown support for a push to build a new courthouse in Greenfield in recent months. King City’s courthouse had to close in 2013, leaving South Monterey County residents to travel to Salinas or Monterey.
