80-year-old Santa Cruz woman dies after crashing into parked cars

UPDATE 8/27/2019 8:25 a.m. The CHP said an 80-year-old woman from Santa Cruz died Monday after crashing into parked cars on 30th Avenue.

It happened at around 1:50 p.m. south of Lewis Circle. The CHP said for an unknown reason, the woman’s car veered off the road and hit a garbage can on the right shoulder of 30th Avenue.

After that, the CHP said the vehicle continued off the road and hit three vehicles. The vehicle continued and hit a mailbox that caused damage to another vehicle.

The CHP said the car came to a stop after hitting the mailbox. At around 2:20 p.m., the woman was pronounced dead at the scene for unknown reasons.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but the CHP does not believe drugs or alcohol were contributing factors.

PREVIOUS STORY: The CHP is asking residents to avoid 30th Avenue and Lewis Circle. Officers are responding to a fatal crash in that area.

The CHP estimates the road will reopen around 4 p.m.
