First black bear in Big Sur Condor Sanctuary spotted
The Venana Wildlife Society shared a video of the first black bear documented to feed at the Condor Sanctuary in Big Sur.
The society said bears are not common in Big Sur, so the sighting is unusual. For the past 20 years, the society has provided stillborn calves to help establish newly released condors. It also reduces lead exposure to older birds feeding on carcasses shot with lead ammunition.
The Ventana Wildlife Society is not releasing young condors in Big Sur this year, so it has temporarily stopped putting out calf carcasses to encourage the bear to move somewhere else.
