Deputy accidentally shoots K9 during pursuit

A K9 with the Paulding County Sheriff’s Department in Georgia was accidentally killed by a deputy during a pursuit.

On July 19, K9 Verro and his partner responded to a domestic dispute, and the department said the suspect was running away. The deputy saw the man jumping fences, so he left the car with K9 Verro in it to chase him.

K9 Verro got hyped up during the intense situation and was able to fit through a partially opened section of his kennel. He made his way to the front cabin and out through a partially opened window without deputies knowing he was out of the car.

The K9’s training kicked in, and he attacked a fellow deputy during the pursuit. He bit the deputy in the back of the leg and held on. Because the deputy did not know K9 Verro had gotten out, he shot and killed the K9 while thinking he was not one of their dogs.

The deputy received puncture wounds and scratches on his leg, but the Sheriff’s Department said the incident left everyone devastated.

During the summer months, K9s in that department only wear bulletproof vests that identify them as K9s in dangerous situations.
