Beach closure lifted at MacAbee Beach

UPDATE 7/24/2019 10:40 a.m. MacAbee Beach is back open after a sewage spill in the bay.

Samples taken show that bacteria levels are back to a safe level. The contaminated water had the potential to cause gastroenteritis or other water-borne illnesses.

PREVIOUS STORY: Macabee Beach in Monterey is closed due to a sewage spill.

The City of Monterey reported to the Environmental Health Bureau that sewage has spilled into the bay. The beach will remain closed until samples indicate that the water is again safe for contact, according to state guidelines.

Contact with contaminated water may cause gastroenteritis and other water-borne illnesses.
