UPDATE: Evacuations lifted as Carmel Police investigate bomb threat
UPDATE 7/19/2019 4:23 p.m. Carmel Police have lifted the evacuations at the Sunset Center and surrounding areas. Residents are now returning home the area has been deemed safe.
UPDATE 7/19/2019 1:50 P.M. Carmel police is evacuating the Sunset Center and the surrounding area after a bomb threat was sent in a text message to a 10-year-old.
The child was attending the Carmel Bach Festival at the center when they received the text that says, “Bomb planted. Pickup 6F @ Sunset Center. @ 3:50.” The child alerted a staff member who called police.
The Sunset Center is evacuated as well as homes on 8th, 9th and 10th Streets between San Carlos and Misson. Those roads are closed at this time and the community is asked to avoid the area around the Sunset Center.
The Monterey County Bomb Squad has arrived at the scene.
The center has no comment at this time.
PREVIOUS STORY: Carmel police said they are evacuating the Sunset Center in Carmel after a bomb threat.
Police said it was sent through a text message and reported to staff. They are clearing the center and sending the bomb squad to investigate.
Chief Tomasi said they do not currently have any leads, but the investigation is still unfolding. The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, Carmel Fire and Monterey Airport Fire are at the scene assisting.
