Rabbits found abandoned in plastic storage bin on Crazy Horse Canyon Road
The SPCA for Monterey County is looking for information to help it find the person or persons who abandoned nine rabbits at Crazy Horse Canyon Road and San Juan Grade Road.
On Monday, a good Samaritan found the bin on the side of the road and took them to the SPCA. The SPCA said the rabbits were overheated, but are doing well now. Inside the container, there were three adult rabbits, two juveniles and four babies.
Beth Brookhouser with the SPCA for Monterey County said the rabbits are expected to make a full recovery. But adds if they were left out there longer, it might not be the same story, “everyone seems to be doing okay. We are glad they were found when they were because otherwise it could have been a lot worse. They were already overheating, they were in a bin that the adults could have easily hopped out of and just gone right in the middle of Crazyhorse Rd. and that would’ve been very dangerous to them and to the drivers.”
One resident KION spoke with who lives off of Crazyhorse Canyon Rd said he sees this happening too often, “people dumping their pets all the time, whether it’s dogs, cats you name it they dump it out here.”
Brookhouser said the SPCA Monterey County handles an average of 900 animal abandonment cases a year and there is never a good excuse, “There are humane options. The SPCA is here seven days a week from 8 to 5 to take in any animals who you can no longer care for, we are here we are funded by donors and that’s what we’re here for.”
The SPCA is now offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. Brookhouser says animal abandonment is a crime and the suspect faces an array of charges. “Including animal abandonment, cruelty, preventing an animal to go with veterinary care. There are many charges that could be placed.”
If you have any information, you are asked to call the SPCA at 831-373-2631.
