Identity of Watsonville man shot and killed after breaking into tent released
UPDATE 7/16/2019 4:00 p.m. Officials have identified a Watsonville man who was shot and killed after entering a tent as 36-year-old Timothy Edward Smith.
The incident happened at Deadman’s campground in Tuolumne County on July 11. The Sheriff’s Office said a couple was sleeping in a tent when Smith went in. They said the woman woke up with Smith on top of her.
The woman yelled and woke up her boyfriend. During the struggle that followed, Smith was shot, and he died at the scene.
PREVIOUS STORY: A Watsonville man who entered a pair of campers’ tent was shot and killed, according to the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office.
The altercation occurred at Deadman’s campground in the Stanislaus National Forest early Thursday morning.
The Sheriff’s Office says a couple was sleeping in their tent when a 36-year-old Watsonville man entered the tent around 2 a.m.
The woman woke to the Watsonville man on top of her.
Her screams woke her boyfriend, and in the ensuing confrontation, the Watsonville man was shot. He died at the scene, authorities say.
The name of the man killed has not been released at this point.
Investigators are working with the district attorney’s office. No arrests have been made.
