DRIVING IN THE FOG: What you should do when the fog rolls in
Foggy conditions on the Central Coast can make for poor visibility. This can be especially dangerous for those on boats and those driving to work.
CHP and Caltrans say when the fog does come in, keep the windows down so you can not only try and see the traffic but also hear it.
“Go slow and just be careful,” says commuter Richard Calabro. “Also do not use your high beams.”
Using your low beams during the fog is important, too. If you flip your high beams on all your doing is reflecting light off the fog back toward you, which can reduce visibility even further.
Be alert, too, you never know if deer are trying to navigate their way out of the fog as well.
“A lot of times deer can come out in front of you,” says Monterey resident, Joanne Roth. “That can cause an accident whether because you’re swerving out of the way or hitting it.”
CHP says whenever fog is in the forecast you should slow down and keep in mind the space between you and the car in front of you.
You should always keep tabs on your car’s windshield wipers, brakes and defrost system, as those tools will maximize your ability to increase your visibility on the road.
