Suspects in murder of Tremain Calloway arrested in Gilroy
On May 21st, 32-year-old Tremain Calloway was shot and killed while driving in Seaside.
Thursday, 19-year-old Carlmari Burgos of Seaside and 21-year-old Nakesholn Wills of Marina were arrested in Gilroy for Calloway’s murder. “Earlier this month arrest warrants were issued for the two suspects. We had information that they were between Seaside and Sacramento. Just a couple days ago Gilroy Police contacted and arrested the individuals,” said Detective Sergeant with the Seaside Police Department, Jorge Enriquez.
The murder shook a tight-knit Seaside community. Calloway was a father of two and soon-to-be husband. His friends described him as a “family man.” “I know that it was very significant for the detectives to go out to family’s house, yesterday , to notify them of the arrests,” said Enriquez.
The Peninsula Regional Violence and Narcotics Team (PRVNT) revealed that the incident was gang related. Seaside Police said the incident on May 21st is the only homicide to take place so far this year. Officers said they have not seen an increase in gang activity since the shooting.
“We don’t think this is a rampid incline of crime. I know it was reported that it was gang related but I think it was more of a personal thing. The individuals may have been in a gang, but I know Mr. Calloway was not,” said Seaside Mayor, Ian Oglesby.
A friend of Calloway’s, who wished to remain anonymous, shared that with the arrests comes relief. They said although they are happy the men are in custody, it does not bring back their friend. They hope the family will now start to heal.
“Hopefully that brings some type of closure to the family and people with be willing to come forward with information,” said Enriquez.
Both Burgos and Wills were booked into the Monterey County Jail, Sunday. Both were assigned a bail at $3,030,000.
