Man arrested on gun charges after Salinas police hear shots fired

Salinas police arrested a man on gun charges after officers heard someone firing multiple rounds from a shotgun and handgun.

The Violence Suppression Task Force was in the area of De La Torre Street and Roy Diaz Street when they heard it. They believed it came from the 1100 block of Jean Avenue, so they went there and community members helped them narrow down the search.

Officers found multiple spent shell casings outside the backyard of a home, where they contacted 23-year-old Carlos Cano. VSTF found 3 handguns, two shotguns, a “ghost” unregistered AR style rifle and multiple rounds of ammunition that matched the shell casings in Cano’s room. One of the handguns was unregistered.

Cano was arrested for negligent discharge of a gun and other gun charges. Police also remind the community that it is dangerous to shoot a gun in the air or in a neighborhood.
