Better Ask Barry: Is CBD safe for dogs?
Most dogs don’t like loud noises. That’s true with Stormy, despite her name.
“She doesn’t like the vacuum, and of course, there’s all fireworks going on everywhere which mimics the big sound, and she likes to hide under places,” said Hahnbee Choi, Stormy’s owner.
The loud explosions we heard July 4 will likely continue at times over the weekend.
So, what can a pet owner do to comfort their dogs?
The newest trend is CBD, a hemp-based derivative that many say helps with a range of issues from pain to anxiety. People use it and claim it works for pets, too.
“Seizures, pain, inflammation, anxiety, all of the above,” said Elizabeth Hayden, a manager with the pet supply store, Chuck and Don’s.
CBD can come in chew form – like a treat – or an oil to drop on food.
“It’s not like a medication that you would get from a veterinarian, that you have to kind of ween them on and off of it,” said Hayden. “It’s something you can use very situationally. It can be one time. It can be daily.”
Some owners also find it helpful on long car rides.
“When I tried the CBD oil, he still whined a little, but there was no throwing up or no belly trouble in the car,” explained Choi. “He just laid down and went to sleep.”
While many say the supplements are effective, there hasn’t been a lot of research done on them. You should always speak with your vet before going the CBD route, especially if your pet is on any other medications.
