Man arrested in connection with Santa Cruz home break-in

Santa Cruz police arrested a man in connection with a home break-in Monday night.

It happened on the 300 block of Oceanview Avenue. Police say the homeowner chased the suspect out of the kitchen, but officers quickly caught and arrested the suspect, Felix Salazar-Villanueva, in the Jesse Street Marsh.

Santa Cruz police say they have contacted Salazar-Villanueva before. He was arrested for prowling in the same area and is a suspect in another case.

Police released these safety tips in response:

Keep exterior doors locked. Secure all windows. If you open a window for ventilation, use a locking mechanism that only allows it to be partially open. Trim hedges below windows to eliminate hiding spots. Install an outside motion security light. Call 911 if you see anything suspicious.
