Placer County deputy identified as diver who died in Monterey

UPDATE 7/1/2019 10:50 a.m. The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office has identified a diver who was found unresponsive at San Carlos Beach in Monterey and later died.

The diver was 51-year-old Michael Lyke from Auburn. He was a Sheriff’s deputy in Placer County.

The Placer County Sheriff’s Office issued a statement to KION’s Sacramento sister station saying, “Our office is deeply saddened by the loss of Sgt. Michael Lyke. He was a respected and valued member of the Sheriff’s Civil Init. Sgt. Lyke’s wife and family are in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

UPDATE 6/30/19 10:50 p.m.

Monterey Police confirm that the diver found unresponsive at San Carlos Beach in Monterey is now dead.

The victim has not been identified at this time.

ORIGINAL STORY 6/29/19:

A missing diver was found unresponsive at San Carlos Beach in Monterey Saturday afternoon, according to the Monterey Fire Department.

Monterey Fire Division Chief Jim Brown said the diver was reported missing around 12:30 p.m.

He said the diver was not breathing when he was found by a lifeguard and another diver after a 30-minute search. CPR was preformed on the diver on the way to the hospital.

The diver is believed to be from out of town.

The diver was taken to Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula.

No word on how the diver is doing at this time.
