Scholarship fund started in memory of Scotts Valley teen
Hundreds gathered, Saturday, to celebrate the life of 15-year-old Jack DeBord.
Those who attended wore jerseys in honor of Jack’s favorite sport: football. “We’re very grateful to have the opportunity to celebrate his life and to have people reflect upon what he meant to them,” said Jack’s mother, Katalin DeBord.
Parents, Katalin and Jim DeBord, said their son was hardworking and loving.
On June 17, the town of Scotts Valley spent 24-hours searching for the 15-year-old. A neighbor’s security camera caught him leaving his home, though he never showed up for work. That night, police found Jack’s body not far from his family home. “We were caught completely off guard by Jack taking his life. We would love for people to educate themselves on suicide prevention especially because it seems to be a rising epidemic in the teen population,” said Katalin.
Jack’s parents started a memorial scholarship fund in Jack’s memory. Every year, they plan to give one deserving San Lorenzo Valley High School student a partial college scholarship. They said Jack’s dream was to attend the University of Utah, like his dad. “There’s just been an unbelievable amount of support,” said Jim.
Those who attended Saturday’s memorial were given bracelets in honor of Jack. His mother hopes when people wear them they will remember that they are not alone. “Suicide is a final choice, but it’s not the right choice. We’d like people to reach out to a trusted adult, a loved one, or a friend when they’re feeling hurt, alone, and low,” said Katalin.
To bring awareness to the rising epidemic of suicide, Jack’s family encourages visiting www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org or calling 1-800-273-8255.
