Boater found dead near Moss Landing on Wednesday
UPDATE 6/26/2019 1:50 p.m. The North Monterey County Fire District confirms that a boater was found dead near Moss Landing.
At around 11:39 Wednesday morning, Monterey Fire and the Coast Guard responded to a medical call for a boat in distress.
When they got to the boat, they found one patient trapped under machinery. The patient had passed.
One of the people KION spoke who knew that victim actually helped first responders get to the boat, something the Monterey Fire Department also confirmed with KION. He says he got a call from a friend telling him that the victim’s boat was in trouble.
“Apparently his hydraulic line must have busted,” said Dan Baker, a friend of the victim, “He went down there to [fix] it, he must have got his rain gear caught up in the shaft in there or something, it pulled him in and ripped his arm open.”
The Monterey County Coroner has not given an official cause of death yet or identified that victim.
First responders spent hours bringing the boat to the harbor and getting the victim’s body off of it.
Officials say it was a major challenged since it was in a confined space.
