Salinas man arrested after rooftop standoff with police
A Salinas man is facing felony and misdemeanor charges after a standoff with police on the roof of a house.
Police responded to the 1500 block of Mazatlan after a report of a man acting erratically and refusing to leave. The suspect’s mother talked to officers, and she told them he was damaging property and may be under the influence or having a psychotic episode.
48-year-old Michael Dorado was in a bedroom, and he did not communicate with officers who were crisis-trained by Monterey County Behavioral Health. The officers kept trying to talk to him, but Dorado allegedly threw an object at one and lunged for both of them. They fired their tasers at Dorado, but he continued to fight and would not follow the officers’ orders.
Dorado got past them and onto the roof through a window. Officers negotiated with Dorado, but he did not cooperate. Police say he started breaking windows and tearing up roof tiles. They say he then started throwing items into the driveway and in areas where there were officers.
While trying to throw a tile off the roof, officers say he lost his balance and rolled off. He was taken into police custody and transported to the hospital for treatment. When he is discharged, he will be facing several charges.
