Sun comes out amidst “June Gloom”

Some call this month ” June gloom, ” but there’s nothing gloomy about the weather this weekend. People at Del Monte Beach in Monterey are already soaking up the sun. ” This weather is awesome. It’s not June gloom. It’s beautiful, ” said Monterey resident, Jennifer Swart.

The sudden flip in temperature came just in time for some kids’ last day of school. Their parents recall last year’s weather. ” I think it was overcast and foggy, ” said Salinas resident, Renata Desouza .

Temperatures are predicted to hit the 90s in parts of the Central Coast this weekend. The National Weather Service said the unexpected heat wave doesn’t always happen this time of year. ” This is time of year, there should be fog along the coastline here in California. That’s what makes this a unique event because there is going to be less fog. In addition to that, this is the first event where you’re going to get those extreme temperatures, ” said Meterologist at the National Weather Service Monterey Bay, David King.

In a matter of days, cloudy skies turned sunny. Some may ask, ” Why the abrupt change? ” King said a late start to Winter and El Nino have a lot to do with it. ” It was a consistent stream of systems that came through. We got used to the rainy conditions and the cooler temperatures. Now that has pushed its way out. We have higher pressure that’s setting up. That’s allowing for these temperatures, ” said King.

The National Weather Service said the Central Coast will likely experience fog and clouds, again, by the end of the month.

Beach-goers said while the sun is shining they will be outdoors. ” There’s nothing better. As cold as the water is the kids are still enjoying it. I don’t know how, but they are, ” said Marina resident, Eddie Lomboy .
