Oakland becomes second U.S. city to decriminalize magic mushrooms
Oakland is now the second city in the U.S. to decriminalize magic mushrooms. The move came after speakers testified that psychedelics helped them overcome depression, drug addiction and PTSD.
The city council voted on it Tuesday, and voted unanimously to decriminalize adult use and possession of magic mushrooms and other entheogenic, or psychoactive, plants and fungi.
It passed with amendments, including warnings that hallucinogens might not be for everyone, and some with problems like depression should get professional help first.
Critics worry about unsafe use, but councilmember Noel Gallo says the measure would let Oakland police focus on serious crime.
Magic mushrooms are still illegal under both federal and state laws.
