Monterey Wharf parking lot construction complete
After 6 months of construction, the waterfront parking lot at the Monterey wharf is finally opened.
The old lot had been there for many years, and it was starting to look like it. Along with the cosmetic and traffic problems the old parking lot had, Monterey believes it should help the environment rather than hurt it.
Steve Wittry, with Monterey Public Works, has been heavily involved in the project. He says, “This is the heartbeat of Monterey, when folks come to visit Monterey… this is where they prefer to park.”
The old parking lot wasn’t extremely safe. People didn’t have a place to walk, and it also had a huge traffic problem. And those problems have now been fixed with new walkways and driving lanes. “The flow is so much better. And we have had so many people compliment, how wonderful
the flow is,” says Mary Alice Cerrito Fettis, with the Fisherman’s Wharf Association.
Those new walkways, lights and improved flow of traffic aren’t the only improvements. The lot has new features with the environment in mind. There are several areas that direct water into a filtration system before dumping it out in the ocean.
While this parking lot is complete, this is only phase one of the project. The Wharf now plans to tackle its lots in the future.
