Alisal parents advocate for teacher pay

Parents at Alisal Union School District spoke up for increased teacher funding at a board meeting, Wednesday.

Parents said teachers in the Alisal Union School District are underpaid and believe that needs to change. They said that more money in teachers’ pockets will have a direct effect on the quality of education given to their kids.

In addition to salary, parents want the district to provide teachers with additional training to help them identify kids with special needs.

“We know they do a lot of work. It is hard work to be in the classroom with a lot of students. We want to advocate for better salaries and enrichment,” said parent, Alma Loredo.

The funding parents are asking for comes from the state’s Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP). It directs resources to higher need school districts like Alisal.

According to the district, over 88% of students receive daily free or reduced lunch. The Monterey County Board of Education said Alisal has the second highest homeless student population in the county.

The Alisal Union School District board said they will give community members a 30-day period to share their thoughts on how LCAP funding will be divided. The 30-day period starts Wednesday, May 29th.
